Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to enacting the "disaster preparedness week and awareness campaign act of 2016"
Purpose
To designate the third full week of September in each year as "disaster preparedness week" in the state of New York, and to provide for a public awareness campaign during the week.
Summary of provisions
Section 1. Short title - "Disaster Preparedness Week and Awareness Campaign Act of 2016."
Section 2. Adds a new section 29-l to the executive law to designate the third full week of September in each year as disaster preparedness week in the state of New York. This section also directs the Disaster Preparedness Commission, in conjunction with any private or public nonprofit organizations and associations that the director may choose, to develop a public awareness campaign to raise public awareness during disaster preparedness week.
Section 3. Amends paragraph i of subdivision 3 of section 21 of the executive law to add a description of the activities undertaken in preparation for the disaster preparedness week awareness campaign to the Disaster Preparedness Commission's required annual report.
Section 4. Effective date.
Justification
While no one can predict when or where a natural or man-made disaster may strike, there are steps that New Yorkers can take to prepare themselves and their families in the event a disaster occurs. Relatively simple things like having a designated meeting spot for your family away from your home, or having emergency supplies packed and ready to go on a moment's notice can go a long way toward seeing everyone through a disaster situation safely. By designating one week in each year to focus on disaster preparedness, we can provide the citizens of New York with the tools and information to get through a disaster situation safely.
