BILL NUMBER:S1811
Title of bill
An act to amend the town law, in relation to permitting fire districts to form ambulance companies
Purpose
To permit fire districts to equip emergency fire districts and first aid squads.
Summary of provisions
Amends section 176 of the Town Law by adding an new subdivision 10-a to allow fire districts to organize, operate, maintain and equip ambulance companies, including the purchase of uniforms to be used by the members of such companies, and provide for the removal of such members for cause.
Justification
Section 176 of the Town Law details the powers and duties of the Board of Fire District Commissioners. Subsection 10 provides that the Board of Fire Commissioners may organize, operate, maintain and equip fire companies but makes no reference to ambulance squads. This bill would clarify the fact that Boards of Fire Commissioners can organize, operate, maintain and equip not only fire companies but also ambulance companies.
