BILL NUMBER:S1987

Title of bill

An act to amend the judiciary law, in relation to judges in the eighth judicial district

Purpose

The purpose of this legislation is to limit, in the eighth judicial district, the number of judges that can be from any one county.

Summary of provisions

Section 1: Subdivision 8 of section 140-a of the judiciary law is amended. Section 2: Sets forth the effective date.

Justification

The eighth judicial district is composed of the following counties: Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Orleans, Genesee, Allegany, Niagara, Wyoming, and Erie, and has twenty-six judges. This legislation would restrict to twenty-two, the number of judges that could come from any one county. This restriction would allow counties with a smaller population the ability to elect judges to the judicial district.
