BILL NUMBER:S2205A

Title of bill

An act to direct the division of veterans' affairs to annually remind assessors of the eligibility of veterans of certain hostilities for the veterans alternative real property tax exemption

Purpose

This bill would require the division of veterans' affairs, in consultation with the department of taxation and finance, pursuant to its training responsibilities, within thirty days of this act and at least annually, to reinforce and/or remind assessors of the fact that the Persian Gulf conflict referenced in section 458-a of the real property tax law includes, but not limited to, hostilities in Afghanistan and Iraq, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Summary of provisions

Section 1: See Purpose.

Section 2: Effective Date.

Justification

There have reportedly been several cases statewide where assessors have rejected the application of veterans who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq because assessors did not realize these brave men and women are covered under the Persian Gulf conflict for purposes of the alternative veterans' real property tax law.

Legislative history

2014-A9921-Passed Assembly/S.7797-Referred to Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs.

Fiscal implications

Minimal.

Effective date

Immediately.
