Title of bill

An act to amend the public health law, in relation to establishing a dietary supplements safety committee

Purpose

To establish the dietary supplements safety committee.

Summary of provisions

The Public Health Law is amended by adding a new section 25 to create a dietary supplements safety committee.

Justification

Dietary supplements are products, not drugs, that include ingredients like vitamins, herbs, minerals and amino acids. Their advertising often clams benefits like rapid weight loss, increased strength or improved sexual stamina. There are roughly 29,000 varieties of dietary supplements for sale across the country. Adequate standards and enforcement for manufacturing, safety and effectiveness are necessary to protect the health and well-being of the residents of New York State.
