Justification

There are almost 1 million Muslims living in New York City and there are more than 100 mosques in New York city alone. Although the Muslim American community continues to grow in New York, a lack of civic participation due to marginalization has plagued this community. This bill establishes an advisory council, in an effort to dispel myths, breakdown stereotypes, and rebuild the sense of community that was once felt by Muslim Americans living in New York. This council will propose ways to advance the sole and participation of Muslim Americans in New York for the purpose of re-immersing innocent Muslim Americans that were marginalized after the horrific September 11 attacks.

The council will also advise the Legislature on appropriate policy developments, official directives, and other issues of significance impacting New York's Muslims. It will bring important faith-based tstaes based on factual findings to the Legislature's attention and make recommendations to address those issues.
