BILL NUMBER:S3820A

Title of bill

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Marine Captain Eric A. Jones Memorial Highway"

Purpose

Designates a portion of the state highway system, in the town of Pound Ridge, county of Westchester, as the "Marine Captain Eric A. Jones Memorial Highway."

Summary of provisions

Section one of the bill amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-d that designates all that portion of the state highway system constituting Route 137 in the town of Pound Ridge, in the county of Westchester, beginning at the intersection of Route 137 and Westchester Ave, and continuing south along Route 137 to the New York-Connecticut border, as the "Marine Captain Eric A. Jones Memorial Highway."

Section two states the commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation of appropriate signage, and that the designation pursuant to section one of this act shall be of a ceremonial nature.

Section three contains the effective date.

Justification

Marine Captain Eric A. Jones, 29, was killed just before sunrise on October 26, 2009 during a helicopter collision in Afghanistan. Captain Jones was on his third deployment, after serving two tours in Iraq.

A helicopter pilot, known for his good looks, gregariousness, quick-witted sense of humor and dedication to his community, Captain Jones had always dreamed of becoming a pilot. He earned his flight wings in 2007 after graduating in 2004 from Northeastern University. A life-long Westchester resident, he was raised in the town of Pound Ridge, and attended Fox Lane High School in Bedford where he was on the swimming and football teams.

New York State Route 137 runs through his hometown of Pound Ridge. There is no more fitting way for the state to memorialize the sacrifice, honor and patriotism of Marine Captain Eric A. Jones than naming a portion of the highway after this fallen hero. He should always be remembered.
