BILL NUMBER:S3907
Title of bill
An act to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to increasing the mandatory retirement age from fifty-five to sixty for police officers in the town of Southampton
Purpose
This legislation would permit all members of the Town of Southampton Police Department to remain in service until the age of 60.
Summary of provisions
Subdivision m of Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law is amended to allow a police officer employed by the Town of Southampton to continue service until attaining age 60.
Justification
Under current law, a member of the Town of Southampton's Police Department must be separated from service upon attaining the age of 55, and those holding the rank of sergeant or higher must be separated from service upon attaining the age of 60. However, the Southampton Town Board has determined that it is in the best interest of the public that the Town have the capability of retaining more experienced police officers. As such, the Town Board has requested, with support of the Southampton Town Patrolman's Benevolent Association, that this amendment to Section 384-d (m) of the Retirement and Social Security Law be adopted to establish a uniform mandatory retirement age of 60 for all members of the Town of Southampton's Police Department regardless of rank.
