BILL NUMBER:S4495

Title of bill

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Specialist David R. Fahey Jr. Memorial Bridge"

Purpose

Designates a portion of the state highway system as the "Specialist David R. Fahey Jr. Memorial Bridge."

Summary of provisions

Section one of the bill amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-d that designates the bridge across the New Croton reservoir on Route 129 in the town of Yorktown, in the county of Westchester, as the "Specialist David R. Fahey Jr. Memorial Bridge."

Section two states the commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation of appropriate signage and that the designation pursuant to section one of this act shall be of a ceremonial nature.

Section three contains the effective date.

Justification

Army Specialist David R. Fahey Jr. was raised in Yorktown in Westchester County. Known for his charm, humor and loyalty to family and friends, he enlisted in the Army in 2007 and served in Korea. In 2010, he was deployed on combat operations to Afghanistan.

Specialist Fahey was killed by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province on February 28, 2011, while serving with the 504th Military Police Battalion of the 42nd Military Police Brigade. Upon his redeployment, he was slated to become one of New York's finest as a member of the New York City Police Department.

The historic Hunters Brook Bridge, located on Route 129 near the border of Yorktown and Cortlandt, overlooks the Croton Reservoir, and is less than three miles from Specialist Fahey's childhood home. Designating the bridge as "Specialist David R. Fahey Jr. Memorial Bridge" pays fitting tribute to this decorated young soldier, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our freedom, state and nation.
