BILL NUMBER:S4666
Title of bill
An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to the taking of deer in the county of Suffolk
Purpose
To extend the time period for the taking the deer by long bow in the County of Suffolk from December 31st until March 31st.
Summary of provisions
Amends Item (h) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of Section 11-0907 of the Environmental Conservation Law to extend the time period for the taking the deer by long bow in the County of Suffolk from December 31st until March 31st.
Justification
The current long bow season for taking deer in Suffolk County, as regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, is from October 1st through December 31st. With the recent explosion of Suffolk County's deer population, communities and municipalities are looking for ways to expand hunting opportunities to help control the deer population. The excessive deer population on eastern Long Island poses a threat to public health, public safety, personal property, and the environment. Allowing for the expansion of the long bow season for deer in Suffolk County for an additional three months, through the end of March, can further help reduce the size of the herd.
