BILL NUMBER:S4768

Title of bill

An act to amend the judiciary law, in relation to providing an exemption from jury duty for service as an election inspector, poll clerk or election coordinator

Purpose

To provide an exemption from jury duty for those providing service as an election inspector, poll clerk or election coordinator

Summary of provisions

Section 1. Amends subdivision (a) of section 524 of the judiciary law, as amended by chapter 240 of the laws of 2004

Section 2. Sets the effective date

Justification

A number of Board of Elections Commissioners have brought up the fact that it is getting increasingly difficult to hire election inspectors and poll clerks for a variety of reasons, whether it is the amount of time required or the amount of money paid. When someone has committed to being an election inspector, poll clerk or election coordinator, there may not be anyone else to fill that spot if that person is selected for jury duty. This bill would provide an exemption for these workers only during the time they are working for the election. This will ensure that the workers who the Board of Elections hire would not be lost to do another civic duty on that day.
