BILL NUMBER:S4836A
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in Nassau county as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge"
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to memorialize a section of the Cross Island Parkway as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge."
Summary of specific provisions
§ 1. Amends the highway law to add a new section 344-d to designate a portion of the state highway system constituting the Cross Island Parkway, New York Route 907-A in Nassau and Queens counties between exits 26 and 27 as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Highway."
§ 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide further installation and maintenance of adequate signage of the state highway system designated by § 1 of this act.
Justification
Police Officer Arthur Lopez was a nine year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department and served with distinction. On October 23, 2012, Officer Lopez, while working in the Nassau County Police Department's Emergency Service Unit, was shot in the chest and killed by the subject of an investigation. Officer Lopez made the ultimate sacrifice at the age of 29. His leadership and devotion to the police force is demonstrated by his assignment to one of the department's most elite units, the Emergency Services Unit, after only five years of service. In honor of Officer Lopez's heroic actions this memorial highway will serve as a constant reminder of his valor in serving and protecting the community.
