Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law and the labor law, in relation to creating a veterans' jobs website
Purpose
To increase employment for Veterans, care givers for disabled veterans and for the immediate family members of active duty military stationed in New York and to prepare a report on current employment of veterans.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 adds a new subdivision 23 to section 353 of the executive law to require the Commissioner of the Division of Veterans Affairs to work with the Commissioner of the Department of Labor to develop an interactive website with job listings that are exclusively available to veterans, care givers for disabled veterans and for the immediate family members of active duty military stationed in New York. The website would allow for applicants to apply for jobs directly through the site.
Section 2 adds a new subdivision 15 to section 21 of the labor law to require the Commissioner of Labor to work with the Commissioner of the Division of Veterans Affairs to establish a website as set forth in section 1. In addition, the Commissioner of Labor shall prepare a report on employment of Veterans, care givers for disabled veterans and for the immediate family members of active duty military stationed in New York.
Section 3 sets forth the effective date.
Justification
The unemployment rate for Veterans who have served post 9/11 is almost 10%. Our brave man and women and their families who have honorably served this country deserve better and we can do better. This legislation will provide a single website that will be exclusive to veterans, immediate family members of disabled veterans, and immediate family members of active duty military stationed in New York. The website will enable them to access employment opportunities that would be exclusively available to them.
