Title of bill
An act to authorize Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. to retroactively apply for a real property tax exemption for certain property in the village of Lawrence, county of Nassau
Purpose
To authorize Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. in the village of Lawrence, in the county of Nassau, to apply for a retroactive real property tax exemption
Summary of provisions
Section 420-a of the real property tax law for the assessment roll will include Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. for exemption.
Justification
Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. is a not-for-profit tax exempt organization that owns property located in the Village of Lawrence, NY. This property is used as a school for religious and educational purposes. The property is located 137 Lawrence Avenue, Lawrence, NY 11559. This legislation would provide Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. with a partial exemption from real property taxes pursuant to 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law for a portion of the 2012 assessment roll with regard to the 2012 general taxes, and the 2013 assessment roll. The transfer of ownership took place after the tax exempt filing date, and as a result was liable for approximately twenty four months of property taxes despite their not-for-profit status. Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. has filed a timely application for tax exemption, and it has been approved, by the Nassau County Assessor. In order to preserve the community's organization for the use by its residents, Machon Basya Rochel, Inc. needs the requested relief from real property taxes.
