BILL NUMBER:S5244
Title of bill
An act to amend the tax law, in relation to the imposition of sales and compensating use taxes in the county of Jefferson
Purpose
Authorizes County of Jefferson to extend the current rate of sales and compensating use taxes for the period beginning September 1, 2004 and ending November 30, 2017.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 amends the tax law to authorize and empower the county of Jefferson to adopt and amend local laws, ordinances, or resolution to continue an additional tax rate during the period of September 1, 2004 and ending November 30, 2017.
Section 2 provides the effective date.
Justification
Currently, 54 out of 57 counties, exclusive of the City of New York, have sales tax rates in excess of 3% and, therefore, must ask for special legislation to continue these additional rates. Since the coun- ty began collecting the additional tax they have been able to lower their property tax rate significantly. Jefferson County has responsibly insured that the funds were used wisely and to help control costs for the benefit of all county residents They will continue to do so with this extension of the sales and compensating use taxes.
