Purpose
Authorizes the use of rifles to take big game in the county of Schenectady.
Summary of provisions
Section 1: Amends item (d) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907 of the environmental conservation law, as amended by chapter 141 of the laws of 2014.
Section 2: Amends item (d) of paragraph a of section 11-0907 of the environmental conservation law, as amended by section 14 of part EE of chapter 55 of the laws of 2014.
Section 3: Amends item (e) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907 of the environmental conservation law, as amended by section 14 of part EE of chapter 55 of the laws of 2014.
Section 4: Amends items (d) and (e) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907 of the environmental conservation law, as amended by section 15 of part EE of chapter 55 of the laws of 2014.
Section 5: Establishes the effective date.
Justification
In Schenectady County it is currently legal to hunt big game with a shotgun, muzzleloader, bow, and pistol, but not with rifles. Advances in shooting technology with regards to shotguns, including the use of rifled shotgun barrels and specialized ammunition, have given shotguns ballistic characteristics similar to that of rifles.
