BILL NUMBER:S5335A
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to state routes
Purpose of general idea of the bill
This Bill would honor the life and service of Officer Glen Searles, who was killed in the line of duty, by designating a portion of New York State Route 481 in the town of DeWitt, in Onondaga County, between exit five and exit six, as the "Deputy Sheriff Glenn Searles Memorial Bridge."
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 designates the portion of the highway system on New York state route 481, in the town of DeWitt, in Onondaga County, between exit five and exit six, as the "Deputy Sheriff Glenn Searles Memorial Bridge."
Section 2 instructs the Commissioner of Transportation to provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage of the state highway system as designated pursuant in this act.
Justification
In 2003, Deputy Sheriff Glenn Searles was struck and killed by a vehicle on 1-481, in the town of Dewitt, while attempting to assist a stranded motorist, in a snowstorm. Searles had served as an investigator with the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office, prior to reaching his goal of becoming a Deputy Sheriff. Searles' service to the community and putting others before himself was well noted. This bill would serve to pay tribute to a man who lost his life doing what he loved, helping others in his community.
