BILL NUMBER:S5756A
Title of bill
An act authorizing the assessor of the city of Tonawanda to accept from Historical Society of the Tonawandas Inc. a retroactive application for exemption from real property
Purpose of the bill
To authorize the Historical Society of the Tonawandas to apply to the City of Tonawanda Assessor for a retroactive real property tax exemption on a certain parcel of land.
Summary of specific provisions
The Assessor of the City of Tonawanda is authorized to accept an application for real property tax exemption from the Historical Society of the Tonawandas, Inc. pursuant to Section 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law. If accepted, the application shall be reviewed as if it had been received on or before the taxable status date established.
Justification
The Historical Society of the Tonawandas, Inc. is a not-for-profit tax exempt organization that recently purchased property located in the City of Tonawanda. This property is used to house and safely store artifacts and collections. The property is located at 126 Broad Street, Tonawanda, New York 14150. This legislation would provide the Historical Society of the Tonawandas with an exemption from real property taxes pursuant to § 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law for a portion of the 2014/2015 assessment rolls. The Historical Society of the Tonawandas has filed a timely application for the tax exemption, and it has been approved by the City of Tonawanda Assessor. This legislation would alleviate the financial burden on the Historical Society of the Tonawandas by allowing the not-for-profit to apply for a real property tax exemption and thus allocate those monies toward better serving the community.
