BILL NUMBER:S5764
Title of bill
An act to amend the economic development law, in relation to adding the Niagara Frontier transportation authority as an eligible applicant for the western New York economic development fund
Purpose or general idea of the bill
To allow for the Niagara Frontier transportation Authority to become an eligible applicant for funds from the Western New York Economic Development Fund, through the Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1: Adds Public Benefit Corporations, such as the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, to the list of "eligible applicants" that can apply for funding from the Western New York Economic Development Fund.
Section 2: States effective date
Justification
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) provides a variety of public transportation services to the Buffalo-Niagara region. These services ensure the proper transportations means necessary for employees, customers, and visitors to get to and from the businesses throughout the region. The NFTA fits well within the overall goals of the Western New York Economic Development Fund. One of the NFTA's current projects involves building a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station, as well as replacing current outdated buses with CNG buses that are more energy efficient, sustainable, and environmental friendly. By enabling the NFTA to become an eligible applicant, additional projects will become possible that will continue to create additional jobs, enhance reliance on sustainable and renewable energy, improve the transportation networks and infrastructure throughout the region, and increase the services that the NFTA can provide to the region and its riders.
