BILL NUMBER:S5830
Purpose
To authorize Yeshiva of South Shore in the hamlet of Hewlett, in the county of Nassau, to apply for a retroactive real property tax exemption
Summary of provisions
Section 420-a of the real property tax law for the assessment roll will include Yeshiva of South Shore for exemption.
Justification
Yeshiva of South Shore is a not-for-profit tax exempt organization that owns property located in the hamlet of Hewlett, NY. This property is used as a school for religious and educational purposes. The property is located 405 Serena Road, Hewlett, NY 11557. This legislation would provide Yeshiva of South Shore with an exemption from real property taxes pursuant to 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law for a part of the 2013-2014 assessment roll and the 2014-2015 assessment roll. The transfer of ownership took place after the tax exempt filing date, and as a result was liable for approximately twenty four months of property taxes despite their not-for-profit status. Yeshiva of South Shore has filed a timely application for tax exemption, and it has been approved, by the Nassau County Assessor. In order to preserve the community's organization for the use by its residents, Yeshiva of South Shore needs the requested relief from real property taxes.
