Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to legislation pertaining to security in school districts statewide

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1. Section 2801-a of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 10 to read as follow:

10. Any legislation pertaining to security in school districts shall not be limited to any individual or group of schools but shall apply universally throughout the state.

Existing law

New law

Justification

As it stands presently a great amount of focus is put on "security" in schools located in urban districts. We have now experienced firsthand, that violence can be found anywhere around the globe as in the case of Columbine and Sandyhook and not just in low income urban districts. If we are going to fairly and equitably address the very real issue of gun violence and keep all safe from the terrorism that is attached to these acts then we must address it universally and consistently with all those involved.

Effective date

§ 2. This Act shall take effect immediately.
