Title of bill

An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to establishing the open season for hunting coyote in certain circumstances

Purpose

Provides that the open season for hunting coyotes shall be all year long in certain instances.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 of this measure amends paragraph o of subdivision 2 of section 11-0905 of the Environmental Conservation Law to allow the open season for hunting coyote to be all year, provided that the county legislature passes a resolution authorizing such hunting within the county.

Section 2 provides for an immediate effective date.

Justification

Coyote populations have grown exponentially and have caused environmental and social difficulties. Many localities have reported increases in the coyote population in addition to increased fears for the safety of family pets and small children. Several residents have also reported being "treed" or forced up a tree to avoid encounters with the volatile animals. Therefore, seasonal restrictions should be lifted so that coyote populations can be controlled more effectively.
