Title of bill
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to exempting dog license fees for deployed active military member's dogs
Purpose or general idea of bill
To exempt dog license fees for deployed active duty military member's dogs
Summary of specific provisions
Section one - amends the agriculture and markets law to add a new subdivision 30 to define "deployed active military member's dog".
Section two amends subdivision 2 of section 110 of the agriculture and markets law to add deployed active military member's dog to the list of what a municipality may exempt from their licensing fees.
Section three sets forth the effective date
Justification
This bill allows municipalities the option to waive a licensing fee for an active military member's dog when they are deployed. The dog would have a license already in the owners municipality, but many times when they are deployed they place the dog with a friend or family member who may reside in a different community. Currently, the law requires that temporary owner to register the dog and pay another licensing fee even though the animal will not be in their care permanently. Although it is not a large fee, our service members with dogs should not have to have the added burden of worrying about additional licensing fees when they are fighting for our country.
