Title of bill

An act to amend the real property tax law, in relation to certain state lands in the county of Washington which shall be subject to taxation

Purpose

Makes certain newly acquired state lands in the towns of Argyle, Ft. Edward and Kingsbury, in the county of Washington, subject to taxation.

Summary of provisions

Amends subdivision (g) of section 532 of the real property tax law to include the towns of Argyle, Ft. Edward and Kingsbury in Washington County to be subject to taxation.

Justification

The State through DEC has purchased tracts of land and is considering purchasing a total of approximately 600 acres of land in Washington County located within the Towns of Fort Edward, Argyle and Kingsbury. These Washington County Grasslands acres are being purchased by the State in order to protect this region's wildlife habitat. NYSDEC has developed a grassland habitat protection plan to conserve these Washington County farmlands.

The agricultural lands of Washington County have been identified as a critical component of the state's efforts to conserve open space, providing agricultural products, scenic open space and vital wildlife habitat.

There is precedent in other counties for similarly situated lands that are purchased by the state and are subject to taxation.
