Title of bill

An act to amend the general business law, in relation to requiring the lobby or entrance of a licensed massage therapist office on be clearly visible from the outside

Purpose

This bill seeks to require the lobby area or entrance of a licensed massage therapist office be clearly visible from the outside.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 of the bill to amend the general business law, in relation to requiring the lobby or entrance of a licensed massage therapist office on be clearly visible from the outside.

Section 2 provides the effective date.

Justification

There has been a substantial increase in the amount of massage parlors that have set up shop under the guise of 'massage therapists' and promoting prostitution and illegal sexual activities. Many of these shops either obstruct the entire front window with posters or the front lobby area is obstructed by a structure in front of the window in order to conceal their client's identities who may be waiting in the lobby area.

This bill seeks to ensure that these massage parlors cannot obstruct their lobby area and the lobby area must be visible from the street. This will deter patrons from visiting these illegal massage parlors and with the loss of business force them to close down.
