Title of bill

An act to amend the public health law, in relation to immunization requirements for certain camp employees

Purpose

This bill would require employees working at camps to be vaccinated

Summary of provisions

Section 1 amends section 1394 of the public health law by adding a new subdivision 5 to require the commissioner of health to promulgate rules and regulations requiring employees at children's overnight camps, summer day camps and traveling summer day camps to receive immunizations that have been recommended by the department. States that this requirement shall not apply to employees who hold genuine and sincere religious beliefs which are contrary to this subdivision.

Sections 2 is the effective date.

Justification

Camp counselors and employees come into close contact with campers. Outbreaks of contagious diseases at summer camps throughout the country have been attributed to people at the camp being unvaccinated.

New York State currently requires several immunizations for entrance into public school. While many campers have been vaccinated by virtue of attending an in-state public school, counselors who come from outside the state or country may not be vaccinated. This puts all campers at risk for contracting diseases.

This bill would require immunizations currently recommended by the New York State Department of Health for camp employees.
