Title of bill
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to establishing and implementing the NY pride/NY certified program for the voluntary labeling of agricultural products grown and produced in this state
Purpose
To establish and implement a NY Pride/NY certified program for agricultural products produced in this state and which meet certain quality requirements.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 creates a new Article 24-A within the Agriculture and Markets Law to establish the NY Pride/NY Certified program
Section 2 provides for an immediate effective date.
Existing law
This legislation adds a new Article 24-A to the Agriculture and Markets Law
Justification
This legislation is necessary to provide clarity to both producers of agricultural products and consumers of those products that commodities bearing the NY Pride/NY Certified label have been produced in accordance with certain requirements.
Consumers will know that NY Pride/NY Certified labeled products have been grown or produced by agricultural producer who has been certified by the United States Department of Agriculture as using good agricultural practices, or has received a similar certification from the USDA that relates to the agricultural product. In addition, to receive the NY Pride/NY Certified label, a producer must participate in an applicable county soil and water conservation district when the producer implements an agricultural management plan.
Agricultural producers will benefit from receiving certification from the New York State Department of Agricultural and Markets, and consumers can rely on purchasing such products with the confidence that they meet these high standards. Only products meeting such high standards will be authorized to bear this label.
