Title of bill
An act authorizing Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. to file an application for retroactive tax exempt status
Purpose
To grant the town assessor for the Town of Islip the authority to exempt Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. from liability for payment of real property taxes due on the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 assessment rolls.
The Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity organization that provides renovated, fully furnished, and mortgage-free homes to disabled veterans and their families.
Summary of provisions
Section 1. This bill authorizes and directs the assessor of the Town of Islip to accept an application from the Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. for exemption from real property taxes pursuant to Section 420(a) of the Real Property Tax Law for the assessment rolls as completed in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 for their property located in East Islip. Upon satisfaction that the Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. would have otherwise been entitled to said exemption, the assessor may grant this exemption from all taxation beginning with respect to these rolls. If exemption is granted, the Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. may be refunded any taxes paid and any taxes, fines, penalties, liens or interest unpaid may be cancelled through the sole discretion of the town board.
Section 2. Effective Date.
Justification
The Lucky Guys of Long Island Inc. purchased their property at 31 Laurel Avenue in East Islip after the taxable status date for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 assessment rolls. This bill would authorize the assessor of the Town of Islip to accept application from this non-profit for exemption from real property taxes pursuant to Section 420(a) of the real property tax law for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 assessment rolls.
