Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to the educational requirements for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants
Purpose
To allow occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants to hold greater educational credentials for licensing then currently in statute.
Summary of provisions
Section 1. Amends section 7904 of the education law to allow for an applicant for a license as an occupational therapist to have a baccalaureate or masters degree or greater.
Section 2. Amends section 7904-a of the education law to allow for an applicant for a license as an occupational therapy assistant to have an associate degree or greater.
Section 3. Sets for the effective date.
Justification
The nationally recognized accrediting agency for the profession of occupational therapy, the American Occupational Therapy Association's Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, has determined that educational programs for occupational therapists may grant either a masters degree or a doctorate degree. In addition, educational programs for occupational therapy assistants may grant either an associate degree or a baccalaureate degree. This proposed amendment to the requirements for education for an occupational therapist and an occupational therapy assistant will allow the department flexibility in granting a license to an applicant who has completed an education that exceeds the current requirements for a license.
