Title of bill

An act to require the director of the classification and compensation division of the civil service department to establish various classifications for nurse practitioners

Purpose

Establishes several classifications for nurse practitioners that is proportional to their education, experience, duties and certifications and the appropriate salary grade allocation of such positions.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 requires the director of the classification and compensation division of the civil service department to classify different positions for nurse practitioners, and allocate appropriate salary grades for such positions according to board certification, job duties, education and experience levels of such nurse practitioners.

Section 2 is the effective date.

Justification

There is ample evidence behind the invaluable contributions of nurse practitioners (NPs) to our state's health care. NPs provide value-added quality care and improve health outcomes for patients. The lack of career ladder for NPs in the civil service system continues to significantly limit the state's ability to recruit and retain NPs.

Having various classifications for NPs will appropriately reflect the complexity of the duties they undertake. Additionally, it will put the NP profession on the same footing with other professions such as pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and doctors, all of whom have career ladders based on certification, education and job duties.
