Title of bill

An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to membership in the New York city teachers' retirement system

Purpose

This bill is intended to ensure that paraprofessionals are eligible for and receive the pension to which they are entitled.

Summary of provisions

Section one of this bill amends the section 13-501(7)(a) of the New York City Administrative Code to eliminate the requirement that a paraprofessionals join the New York City Teachers' Retirement System.

Section two of this bill provides that this act shall take effect immediately.

Justification

Some paraprofessionals (teacher aide, educational associate, auxiliary trainer, bilingual professional assistant, family worker, family associate, and parent program assistant) under the current system neglected to join the retirement system when they began employment and years later discovered that they had not accumulated an appropriate retirement benefit. This legislation will treat paraprofessionals like all other educators and ensure that they receive a pension commensurate with their years of dedicated service.
