Title of bill

An act in relation to granting Kevin Moriarty Tier IV status in the New York state teachers' retirement system

Purpose

To allow Kevin Moriarty to apply for Tier IV status.

Summary of provisions

This legislation would allow Mr. Moriarty, a member of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System, to be deemed to have joined the system in 1998 if he shall file an application therefore on or before December 31, 2016.

Justification

Mr. Moriarty began employment with Stony Brook University in 1998 as a part time instructor. At that time, he was advised that he was not eligible for participation in the New York State Teachers' Retirement System. In 2013, when he became a full time professor at the university, he joined the system and was advised that he could have joined back in 1998. This bill will allow him to file an application to join the system as of his original start date conditioned upon making appropriate application.
