Title of bill

An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to the resident curator program

Purpose

To add the Susan B. Anthony house in the eleventh park region to the resident curator program.

Summary of provisions

Section I : Establishes the resident curator program and adds the Susan B. Anthony House in the eleventh park region to the program.

Section 2: Effective date.

Justification

Susan Brownell Anthony is an enduring historical icon of the women's suffrage movement. Born in Massachusetts, she later moved with her family to New York State. During her formative years, Anthony and her family called the Town of Greenwich in Washington County home. There she attended school and went on to become a teacher herself. Her childhood home in Greenwich is now preserved as a historical site for residents and tourists alike to visit and enjoy. Historical preservation, however, calls for resources in order to maintain quality, authenticity, and historical value, especially within a county that does not have any state registered sites. Curators have expertise in the area of preservation, as well as the handling of administrative responsibilities required by that process. This legislation adds the Susan B. Anthony House in the eleventh park region to the resident curator program, allowing a curator to reside in the home in order to assume liability and financial obligation associated with its rehabilitation, maintenance and use.
