Title of bill
An act to amend the social services law and the not-for-profit corporation law, in relation to inquiring into past military service on applications for public welfare
Purpose or general idea of bill
This legislation would direct the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to furnish an applicant or recipient of public assistance benefits, the contact information of the Division of Veteran's Affairs to ensure that our veterans receive the proper assistance they need.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1. Subdivision 3 of Section 20 of the social services law is amended.
Section 2. Section 202 of the not-for-profit corporation law is amended.
Section 3: Effective date.
Justification
When an individual applies for public assistance from a social services district, they are not currently being asked if they have served in the military. This bill would ensure that on every form filled out by an individual for the purpose of obtaining financial assistance from any source, the applicant will be asked if they have served in the military. If they are or have been a member of our Armed Forces they must be given the contact information of the state Division of Veterans' Affairs.
Prior legislative history
None. New bill.
Fiscal implications
To be determined
Effective date
This act shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall have become law
