Title of bill

An act to amend the elder law, in relation to the establishment of a senior center council

Purpose

This bill would establish the New York State Senior Center Council.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 amends the elder law by adding a new section 216. This section establishes the council and its membership; in addition this section defines what compensation for the membership shall be. The section goes on to describe to purpose of the council.

Section 2 sets the effective date.

Justification

Senior centers are a vital part of communities in the state of New York. Senior centers serve as a community in and of its own for many of the seniors they serve. From hot meals and social interaction, to transportation and case management, many seniors would be left alone and live in isolation were it not for the senior centers in their communities. This bill would provide a forum at which information regarding efficient and effective operation strategies for senior center could be shared. The council would encourage peer to peer discussion as well as input from seniors themselves. The results of this discussion would be offered to the state in order to enhance senior centers throughout New York.
