        COMMEMORATING the Bicentennial of the Town of Lyme
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  intent  of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate  the  distinguished  histories  of  the  communities   which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  200th  Anniversary  of  the  Town of Lyme in Jefferson
County, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Town of Lyme will celebrate  its  Bicentennial  with  a
community  weekend  on  July  27-29,  2018,  beginning with an ice-cream
social and block dance on Friday, July 27th, followed by a community day
craft show and bicentennial dedication ceremony on Saturday, July  28th,
featuring  music by the 10th Mountain Division Band and a fireworks show
at Chaumont Beach, and culminating with a parade, carnival and  barbecue
on Sunday, July 29th; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Town of Lyme is composed of lands once part of the Town
of Brownville, and was formed in 1818; and
 
  WHEREAS, The name Lyme, was suggested by a resident of Cape Vincent,
Eben Kelsy, a former resident of Lyme, Connecticut; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Patriotic fervor has never lacked in Lyme, and many of its
earliest settlers were veterans of the Revolutionary War and The War  of
1812; and
 
  WHEREAS, The first independence celebration in Jefferson County took
place  on Independence Point in the Town of Lyme in 1802, thus the name;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Lyme has sent many of its residents to every conflict, both
large and small, that the United States has been involved in,  including
the War of 1812, the Patriot War, Civil War, both World Wars, the Korean
War and the Vietnam War; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In  its  two  centuries,  a host of industries, trades and
professions have served the town  including:  fur  trapping,  commercial
fishing, farms, dairies, pot and pearl ash production, lumber and lumber
mills,  ice harvesting, seed companies, blacksmiths, lime kilns, hotels,
motels, spas, boat and ship  building,  barrel  makers,  rock  quarries,
bakeries, grist mills and marinas; and
 
  WHEREAS,  As  in  the  past,  the Town of Lyme today derives a large
amount of economic  benefits  from  its  waterways,  and  includes  many
seasonal  residences, boating, recreational fishing, restaurants, motels
and marinas; and
 
  WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb  and  flow  of  decades  of
growth  and  change,  the  Town  of  Lyme  continues  its  commitment to
enhancing the quality of life  of  its  citizens,  ensuring  a  positive
 
business,  institutional  and  educational  climate,  and  providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Bicentennial  of  the  Town  of  Lyme,  recognizing  the
significance  of  the  role  it  continues  to  play  in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to Supervisor Scott Aubertine, Town of Lyme.
