What's happening

This bill ensures municipalities in New York with populations over 200,000 receive equal and increased per capita state aid.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses funding disparities. by guaranteeing that all large municipalities (those with populations over 200,000) receive the same per capita amount of state aid, eliminating historical inequities between cities of similar size.

  2. Provides an immediate funding boost. to underfunded large municipalities by granting them an additional 13% on top of their existing base level grant, helping to quickly raise their aid closer to better-funded peers.

  3. Links future funding to the highest current rate. among large municipalities, meaning all qualifying cities will have their per capita aid increased to match the most generously funded city in their group, potentially leading to substantial budget increases for some cities.

  4. Ensures aid is distributed fairly during shortfalls. by requiring that if there isn’t enough money to fully fund all increases, available funds will be apportioned proportionally, protecting each municipality’s relative share.
