The bill expands eligibility for rent increase exemptions to include children with disabilities, not just spouses or heads of household.
Why it matters
Expanding rent increase exemption eligibility to children with disabilities acknowledges the financial and caregiving burdens that families with disabled children often face. , potentially offering critical financial relief and housing stability to more households.
The bill ensures that families where a child—not just a spouse or head of household—has a qualifying disability can access protections against rent increases. , which may help prevent displacement or homelessness among vulnerable populations.
By updating the definition of "eligible head of the household," the legislation aligns housing support policies with modern understandings of family structure and disability. , reflecting greater inclusivity and recognition of diverse caregiving situations.
The change could have a meaningful impact on intergenerational households or single parents caring for a disabled child, broadening the social safety net for those who may otherwise fall through the cracks of existing programs.
