What's happening

This bill requires certain state contracts under $5 million to be reserved for small, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses.

Why it matters

  1. Directs more state contract opportunities to small, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses. , which can help level the playing field and potentially address historic disparities in public contracting.

  2. Applies specifically to multi-year contracts under $5 million awarded by the Office of General Services. , meaning a significant portion of state spending could shift toward diverse small enterprises, potentially stimulating local economies.

  3. Could increase competition and innovation. by encouraging smaller and more diverse firms to bid for state contracts that might otherwise go to larger, established companies.

  4. May require changes in how state procurement is conducted. , possibly leading to new outreach, support, or compliance measures to ensure eligible businesses can access and benefit from these reserved contracts.
