What's happening
This bill requires all buses and commercial trucks in New York to be equipped with commercial GPS devices that account for vehicle size and road restrictions.
Why it matters
Enhances public safety. by requiring buses and commercial trucks to use GPS devices that help drivers avoid roads and bridges not suitable for their size, reducing the risk of accidents and infrastructure damage.
Addresses long-standing issues. with commercial vehicles getting stuck or causing hazards by following standard GPS systems not programmed for truck restrictions, such as low bridges or weight-limited roads.
Places responsibility on vehicle operators. to keep the GPS device in good working order and readily accessible, making compliance an ongoing duty rather than a one-time installation.
May impact costs and operations. for commercial transportation companies, as they will need to ensure all vehicles are equipped with compliant GPS units and train drivers to use them correctly.
