What's happening
This bill requires the Department of Environmental Conservation to revoke permits if the permit holder violates any state or federal law.
Why it matters
Strengthens accountability for permit holders. This bill would make it much easier for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to revoke permits, increasing the consequences for companies or individuals who break any state or federal law—not just environmental laws.
Could impact a wide range of industries. Because the bill covers any violation of state or federal law, permit holders in sectors like construction, manufacturing, energy, and agriculture would all be at greater risk of losing their permits, affecting their ability to operate.
Encourages stricter compliance. The threat of automatic permit revocation may push businesses and organizations to be more vigilant in following all laws, not just those directly related to their environmental practices, potentially reducing legal violations overall.
