What's happening
This bill allows disabled veterans, regardless of residency, seven days of free access to sporting activities in New York that usually require a license or permit.
Why it matters
Expands access for disabled veterans nationwide. By removing the residency requirement, the bill makes New York’s sporting opportunities more accessible to disabled veterans from anywhere in the country, potentially encouraging tourism and recognition of their service.
Financial relief for disabled veterans. The waiver of license and permit fees for up to seven days can significantly reduce costs for disabled veterans who wish to participate in hunting, fishing, or other regulated outdoor activities, making these experiences more attainable.
Flexibility and autonomy. Veterans can choose any seven days, at their discretion, to use this benefit—allowing them to plan trips around personal schedules, events, or rehabilitative needs without bureaucratic hurdles.
Potential for increased veteran engagement and well-being. By easing access to outdoor recreation, the bill may support the physical and mental health of disabled veterans, recognizing the therapeutic value of nature and community involvement.
