What's happening

This bill appropriates $63,692.32 to the Frank K. Skartados Living Trust for the unpaid 2018 salary of the late Assemblymember Skartados.

Why it matters

  1. Honors service and provides for survivors. By appropriating the remainder of Assemblymember Skartados's 2018 salary to his estate, the bill recognizes his public service and ensures that his family or designated beneficiaries receive compensation he would have earned had he not passed away mid-term.

  2. Sets a precedent for handling mid-term deaths. The bill clarifies and reinforces state policy on how to address salary payments when a legislator dies before the end of their term, ensuring future cases are treated with consistency and fairness.

  3. Reflects fiscal responsibility and transparency. The specific appropriation amount and public legislative process ensure that state payments to deceased officials aren’t handled informally, but are openly authorized and tracked, maintaining transparency in state expenditures.
