What's happening

This bill extends the Department of Environmental Conservation's authority to regulate hunting seasons in New York's northern zone until 2021.

Why it matters

  1. Extending the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) authority allows for ongoing, flexible management of hunting seasons in the Northern Zone, which is important for adapting to changing wildlife populations and ecosystem needs.

  2. The DEC can continue to adjust the timing, duration (up to 14 days before or after the main season, not to exceed 16 days total), and specific rules (such as which types of deer may be hunted and permit requirements), giving them tools to balance ecological health with hunting interests.

  3. This extension also ensures that the needs and concerns of various stakeholders—such as property owners, hunters, and local communities—are considered each year, rather than locking in static regulations that might not fit changing circumstances.
