What's happening

Requires all new buses sold in New York after July 1, 2021, to have rear exhaust pipes at the upper right corner.

Why it matters

  1. Aims to reduce exposure to harmful exhaust fumes for pedestrians and passengers. by requiring bus exhaust to be released higher and further away from street level and boarding doors, the bill may help lower the risk of inhaling pollutants, especially for children and vulnerable populations around buses.

  2. Could improve air quality at bus stops and in densely populated urban areas. since most buses idle and load/unload in close proximity to people, redirecting exhaust upward and away could have a meaningful impact on local, street-level air pollution.

  3. May set a precedent for vehicle design regulations in New York and beyond. this targeted design change could pressure manufacturers to adopt safer exhaust systems more broadly, influencing bus design standards outside the state as well.
