What's happening
This bill expands the geriatric service demonstration program to promote collaboration between home care and mental health providers for integrated care.
Why it matters
Encourages integrated care for seniors. By promoting collaboration between home care and mental health providers, the bill aims to address both physical and mental health needs of elderly individuals in a more coordinated way, which can lead to better health outcomes and quality of life.
Supports aging-in-place. Integrated services may help more seniors remain in their homes rather than being institutionalized, which is often preferred by older adults and can be less costly for families and the state.
Promotes more efficient use of resources. Coordinating mental and physical healthcare can reduce duplication of services, prevent avoidable hospitalizations, and ensure that care teams are working together rather than in silos, potentially saving money and improving care delivery.
Acknowledges the complexity of elder care. The amendment recognizes that elderly individuals often have intertwined physical and mental health challenges, and that effective treatment requires collaboration across different types of providers.
