What's happening
This bill updates references to insurance law sections and broadens how fire insurance tax funds can be used by the East Meadow Volunteer and Exempt Fireman's Benevolent Association.
Why it matters
Expands the use of fire insurance tax funds. Instead of restricting these funds solely to the care and relief of disabled or indigent volunteer and exempt firemen and their families, the bill allows the East Meadow Volunteer and Exempt Fireman's Benevolent Association to use the money for any purpose outlined in its broader organizational mission, potentially increasing flexibility in meeting community or member needs.
Aligns with current insurance law. The bill updates outdated section references in the insurance law, ensuring legal clarity and consistency, which matters for accurate compliance and smoother administration of the association’s affairs.
May impact transparency and accountability. By broadening the allowed uses of these funds, the bill may require the association to establish clearer guidelines or oversight on how money is spent, which could affect how both the public and membership perceive the stewardship of these public-derived resources.
