What's happening

This bill allows facilities to receive reimbursement for up to 25 reserved bed days if a care plan includes therapeutic leave.

Why it matters

  1. Supports patient-centered care. By allowing up to 25 reimbursed reserved bed days for those with therapeutic leave in their care plans, the bill recognizes the importance of individualized treatment and flexible support for residents needing time away for therapeutic reasons.

  2. Helps facilities maintain stable operations. The extended reimbursement ensures nursing homes and similar facilities can financially support holding a resident’s bed during longer therapeutic leaves, reducing administrative pressure to fill beds quickly and maintaining continuity for residents.

  3. Facilitates smoother transitions and recovery. Residents who can take therapeutic leave with the assurance their bed will be held are more likely to return to the same familiar environment, which can benefit mental health and overall recovery, especially for those with complex care needs.

  4. Promotes comprehensive care planning. By tying the increased reserved bed reimbursement to the presence of a therapeutic leave in the care plan, the bill incentivizes facilities to develop thorough, individualized care strategies that consider broader aspects of the resident’s well-being.
