What's happening
This bill requires companies to verify buyers are at least eighteen before shipping tobacco products purchased online or otherwise.
Why it matters
Requires companies to actively verify the age of buyers before shipping tobacco products. , adding an extra step (an authorized signature form) that must be completed and returned before an order is fulfilled. This could reduce underage access to tobacco purchased online.
Shifts more legal responsibility onto sellers. , potentially exposing them to penalties if they fail to implement effective age verification processes, which may encourage stricter compliance and oversight within the tobacco retail industry.
Could impact the convenience and speed of online tobacco purchases for all buyers. , as every purchase now requires an additional verification step—potentially deterring casual or impulse buys, especially among underage individuals attempting to circumvent age restrictions.
