What's happening

This bill allows full-time college or university students in New York to serve as election inspectors or poll clerks.

Why it matters

  1. Expands the pool of eligible election workers. by allowing full-time college and university students to serve as inspectors or poll clerks, potentially reducing staffing shortages at polling sites and increasing efficiency on Election Day.

  2. Encourages civic engagement among young adults. , giving students direct experience in the electoral process, which could foster long-term voter participation and greater interest in public service.

  3. Provides flexibility and representation at polling places. , as students can serve in the county where their school is located (not just their home county), making it easier for out-of-town students to participate and better reflecting the local community’s diversity.

  4. Sets clear eligibility requirements. (must be a registered NY voter, not running for office, not closely related to a candidate, and proficient in English), ensuring student workers meet the same standards as other poll workers and maintain election integrity.
